FerAppease is a new product on the market used to treat animals arriving onto the farm to reduce stress and promote better performance. Animals experiencing stress may lead to reduced weight gain, poor feed conversion and carcase bruising along with other health issues leading to lower profits
FerAppease contains an active ingredient, a synthetic analogue of the Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance (MBAS). This substance is secreted by the skin of lactating animals’ mammary glands which naturally enduces an appeasing effect on suckling offspring. The product is topically applied and the active ingredient, MBAS is assimilated by the vomeronasal gland located in the nose of the animal. Once treated, the regions of the amygdala and hypothalamus decrease threat perception leading to reduced flight zones, cortisol levels, inflammation and lower mortality and morbidity.
FerAppease should be used whenever cattle are exposed to husbandry procedures that could cause stress, including weaning, dehorning, castration, vaccination and transportation.
Foyle’s Farms of Excellence has found positive results with significant increases to feed intakes during the transition period, equating to an extra 5-10kg of liveweight gain over the finishing period. The topical treatment lasts about 2 weeks.
